Mint 20 is a long-term support (LTS) release based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, so it will be supported until June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this tutorial, we\u2019ll guide you step-by-step on how to upgrade from Linux Mint 19 to Linux Mint 20, codenamed \u2018Ulyanna\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"heading1\">Preparing for the Upgrade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a few things you\u2019ll want to prepare in advance and keep in mind before upgrading from Linux Mint 19 to Mint 20.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Internet connection quality: <\/strong>You\u2019ll need a fast and stable internet connection to download the upgrade package, which is around 1.4 GB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Time requirement: <\/strong>The upgrade procedure may take 1-2 hours to complete, dependending on your internet speed. Make sure you have the time (and patience!) for the process.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Backup before beginning: <\/strong>Although most upgrades take place without an issue, they are not 100% fail proof. Thus, it&#8217;s highly recommended that you backup your files or system snapshot prior to initiating the upgrade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With that out of the way, let\u2019s begin the installation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"image is-16by9\">\n<iframe class=\"has-ratio\" width=\"300\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k-r1_y9iK34?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step1\">Step 1: Verify System Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To start off, make sure you\u2019re running Linux Mint 19.3, codenamed \u2018Tricia\u2019. The instructions for this tutorial will not work with Mint 19.2, codenamed \u2018Tina\u2019, or any earlier releases, so you must upgrade to 19.3 before proceeding. To check your release version, run the command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ cat&nbsp; \/etc\/os-release<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The following output confirms you\u2019re running Linux Mint 19.3.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1-1-300x115.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You must also ensure that you are running a 64-bit system. You can verify this using the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ dpkg &#8211;print-architecture<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If your system\u2019s architecture is 64-bit, you should get <strong><strong>amd64<\/strong><\/strong> as the output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2-1-300x71.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the output on the terminal reads <strong>i386<\/strong>, you\u2019re running a 32-bit architecture PC, and the upgrade will not be successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step2\">Step 2: Update the system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve confirmed you\u2019re running Mint 19.3 with a 64-bit system, you need to ensure that the local cache and installed packages are up-to-date. To do that, run the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ sudo apt update &amp;&amp; sudo apt upgrade -y<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: This might take a while depending on the number of installed packages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"152\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3-1-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step3\">Step 3: Create a System Snapshot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned before, you should perform a backup prior to upgrading from one release to another. Modern Linux Mint releases come pre-installed with <a href=\"https:\/\/teejeetech.com\/timeshift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Timeshift<\/a>, a backup tool designed to take a snapshot of your system. If anything goes wrong during the update, you can use the snapshot to restore the system to an earlier date or point in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timeshift provides a similar functionality to System Restore in Windows, and only backs up system settings and files. User files such as documents, images, and videos are excluded from the backup, so you\u2019ll also need to back those up to another device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a snapshot, simply search and launch Timeshift from the application menu and follow the instructions displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4-1-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always advisable to store the snapshot in an external storage device for better data security. The created snapshot will be displayed on the Timeshift GUI as shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/5-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/5-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/5-1-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step4\">Step 4: Install the Mintupgrade Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Linux Mint provides the Mintupgrade utility, an upgrade tool that lets you upgrade from one Mint release to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can easily install Mintupgrade from Ubuntu repositories by running the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ sudo apt install mintupgrade -y<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/6-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/6-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/6-1-300x120.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you initiate the actual upgrade process, it\u2019s recommended to run a simulation to check for any issues or errors that might affect the upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To perform the upgrade check, run the following command on the terminal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ sudo mintupgrade check<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The simulation tool loads a GUI that performs a test run of the actual upgrade process and checks if the system is ready for the upgrade. To proceed, press<strong> \u2018Y\u2019 <\/strong>and hit <strong>ENTER.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"252\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7-1-300x148.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The simulation also reports any errors encountered. In our case, the simulation encountered foreign packages that needed to be downgraded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/8-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/8-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/8-1-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To resolve this error, head over to <strong>\u2018Software Sources\u2019<\/strong> from the Mint menu. Click <strong>\u2018Maintenance\u2019 <\/strong>on the left sidebar and select <strong>\u2018Downgrade foreign packages\u2019<\/strong>. Some packages no longer exist in Mint 20, and can be safely removed \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io\/en\/latest\/upgrade-to-mint-20.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">check out Mint\u2019s user guide<\/a> for more info.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/9-1.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/9-1.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/9-1-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A terminal will pop up. In our case, it took roughly 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/13.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/13.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/13-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step6\">Step 6: Upgrade from Mint 19.3 to Mint 20<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With all the packages downloaded, perform the upgrade to Mint 20 by executing the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ mintupgrade upgrade<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To continue, type <strong>\u2018Y\u2019 <\/strong>and hit <strong>ENTER.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/14.png\" alt=\"tutorial code screenshot\" class=\"wp-image-94442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/14.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/14-300x120.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The upgrade process installs new packages, removes obsolete and unused ones, and performs system adjustments. The entire process takes roughly 50 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the upgrade is complete, you will be prompted to reboot your system.
